Moving to Fort Worth From Out of State
The short answer: before you look at a single listing, figure out which part of Fort Worth fits your life, what the monthly payment really looks like and how you'll get around. The house comes last. Everything below is that order, spelled out.
Coming from a specific place? There are pages for moving from California and moving from Dallas. This one is for everyone else, wherever you're starting from.
The order I'd tackle a Fort Worth move in
1. Choose the kind of Fort Worth you want
Fort Worth is historic bungalow neighborhoods, brand-new communities and acreage, and all of it answers to the same city name. Before you fall in love with a listing, decide which of those sounds like your Tuesday. My Fort Worth relocation guide is built to help you do exactly that.
2. Build the real monthly number
The number a lender approves you for isn't necessarily the number I want you spending. Mortgage, property taxes, homeowners insurance, HOA fees, utilities and maintenance all belong in the budget. I break each one down in what it actually costs to live in Fort Worth.
3. Plan one in-person trip
You can do a lot of this from a distance, but I'd plan at least one trip before you buy. Drive the commute at the hour you'd actually drive it. Go to dinner. Drive around on a Sunday morning. Fort Worth is bigger than it looks on a map, and a Fort Worth address doesn't guarantee a short drive to everything else in Fort Worth.
4. Decide whether to rent first
If you've never lived here, renting for a year is a reasonable plan. You learn the city, test a few neighborhoods and find out what your commute feels like before you sign a mortgage. If you already know where you want to be and the finances are ready, buying can make sense. There's no prize for buying the fastest.
5. Then start touring homes
Once you know the area, the budget and the trade-offs, house hunting gets much easier. You'll know what a good fit looks like before you walk in the door.
The Texas paperwork clock
Texas gives new residents 90 days to move from an out-of-state driver license to a Texas license (Texas DPS) and 30 days to register a vehicle (TxDMV). Registering requires proof of insurance and, depending on your county, an emissions inspection. Rules and requirements can change, so check the official pages for your situation.
If you buy: the homestead exemption
Once you own a home and live in it as your primary residence, ask about the homestead exemption. Applications are filed with your county's appraisal district, which for most of Fort Worth is the Tarrant Appraisal District. After you qualify, the Texas Comptroller says the appraised value of your homestead may not increase more than 10 percent per year. The cap starts on January 1 of the tax year after you first qualify.

Questions people ask before moving to Fort Worth
Where should I start if I don't know Fort Worth at all?
Start with the relocation guide. Then look at the neighborhood pages that match the way you want to live, and we'll narrow it down from there.
Should I rent before I buy?
If you've never lived here, it's a perfectly reasonable move. If you're financially ready and you know where you want to be, buying can make sense. Either way, don't rush.
Can I handle most of this from another state?
A lot of it, yes. I'd still plan at least one visit so you can drive the commute and see the neighborhoods in person.
How soon do I have to switch my driver license and register my car?
Texas DPS says you have 90 days after moving to switch your license, and TxDMV says you have 30 days to register your vehicle.
Is the listing price the price I'll actually pay each month?
No. Property taxes, insurance, HOA fees, utilities and maintenance all change the monthly picture. Look at the whole payment, not just the list price.
Moving here and not sure where to start?
Tell me where you're coming from, what you're looking for and when you're hoping to move. I'll help you narrow down where I'd start looking, even if you can't name a single Fort Worth neighborhood yet. Prefer to read first? Grab the free relocation guide. Ready to talk? Let's talk.
